Becoming a parent for the first (or subsequent) time can be hard! Sleep struggles, waking up and not being able to get back to sleep due to worry, feeling unable to cope and feeling alone – all of which can start to feel overwhelming.
Postnatal or perinatal anxiety takes up valuable head space, stealing the peace you deserve and impacting the enjoyment parenthood can bring as it takes over thoughts and head space. It’s easy to get used to it over time and to just accept anxiety as part of life ‘Oh it’s just the way I am, I’m a worrier’ or ‘Worrying is part of the territory of being a parent!‘
Yes, some increased worry when you become a parent is inevitable, but please know it doesn’t have to take over your life. You don’t have to be a victim of your thoughts.
Only when we address our anxiety do we realise just how much of our life it’s been impacting – our moods, our thoughts, even entire days – from a constant niggling in the background to a full blown fear of something terrifying occurring.
Some parents experience unwanted, downright scary thoughts, some mothers worry about leaving their baby and returning to work. Some parents feel that guilt that anxiety is affecting the kind of parent they wanted to be.
Some feel angry and are confused as to why this is.
You are not the only parent feeling like this! A lot of the above is normal and may well pass as things settle down. Some increased worry when you become a parent is inevitable, but it please know it doesn’t have to take over your life. You don’t have to be a victim of your thoughts.
You don’t have to put up with anxiety and you can enjoy or get back to enjoying mother or fatherhood.
Of course anxiety also affects our body so this is something we will address with breathing and relaxation skills to reset your nervous system from fight and flight into it’s natural resting mode where everything works better. To take this one step further you can add in reflexology treatments to rebalance your body’s systems as well as allowing you to carve out some peaceful, nurturing time to put your feet up and allow your your body and mind to fully relax.
